Beyond Arrogance
I bet David Cameron can’t believe his luck!
For years there have been a wedge of Tory Grandees poncing around in the name of political activity at our expense. Oh and what expense that has been.
However, now we all know their activity was primarily one of self-interest, mainly in the guise of collecting expensive goodies like £8,000 plasma screen televisions and repairs to their personal property. Unlike the rest of us who have to purchase such things out of our own highly taxed income.
Now, thanks to Expense Claim revelations David Cameron can remove this dead wood from the party and begin the re-invention process. A little bit like Tony Blair had to do in order to change Old Labour into New Labour. Although as we all now know it was all done with smoke and mirrors and really it’s always been Old Labour hiding behind the spin which is why the country is currently on its knees.
Stupid is as stupid does
Just when you thought you had seen the height of arrogance along comes another demonstration of delusion in the name of Sir Anthony Steen.
First of all here are some of the things he’s claimed on expenses in the name of working for us, the people who pay his salary:
Mr Steen submitted a claim for £13,742 in January 2005. He sent a letter acknowledging the sum would take him to the limit of the allowance three months before the deadline.
Among the details of the claim published last night were:
- £2,858.94 on leaking pipes;
- £1,755.89 for fixing water supply from the “spring and bore hole”;
- £1386.43 on “repair and maintenance”;
- £1,318 on a wrought iron fireplace;
- £597.14 on lights;
- £1,000 on propane gas;
- £120 for “fencing on two fields leading down to the stables”;
- £459 for a woodland consultant to inspect new plantings.
The invoice from the expert included work to tag shrubs and consider the need for “additional guarding” against rabbits.
His arrogance and lack of any conscience is proved without doubt by his comment when asked if the information should ever have been released, he replied:
“No. What right does the public have to interfere with my private life? None.”
He said that the expense uproar was because we were jealous of his big house, which he said, some people said looked like Balmoral Castle. As his looks nothing like the royal residence it is more likely he made this comment up to show off about his big house!
